February 14th 2023: It's Valentine's Day and we just had one heck of a fun weekend hosting all these love birds. Our assistant manager Lydia really put her heart into it 😂 no seriously wait till you see the plethora of hearts she strategically placed throuhout the rooms at Riverside Mountain Lodge and Carriage House Inn here in Downieville!
And of course we can't just do it for one weekend since Valentine's Day is in the middle of the week so we're doing it again this coming weekend!
I'm recovering from all the fun we had over the weekend. It was seriously back-to-back between a Valentine's-themed happy hour with love songs sung by Brandon Dannals at Boomtown Lounge & Backyard and then karaoke into the night St. Charles Place. Only to be followed by brunch the following morning Boomtown again and Superbowl Sunday.
It's a joy to see Downieville through the eyes of a child.
One of my favorite memories from the weekend was watching a few local kids, about 9 years old, sweep the sidewalks of local merchants for a few bucks. They furiously beat the cement in hopes of making the work go quickly. Dust billowed into the air and fell back down onto the sidewalk as they giggled, faces kissed with dirt. Not a care in the world for these kiddos - nurtured by community. Safe.
It's just so awesome for kids to grow up here (and us to grow together here) to be a part of each of the many facets that make up a community. And to be able to care and contribute to each one of them in a meaningful way.
So this Valentine's Day, I celebrate love for the community and getting to know each other and care for one another in a small town. I celebrate getting over our differences to care for what matters - each other, our community and humankind. We're so lucky to be a part of this rich and vibrant place - Downieville CA! ❤️

February 2, 2023: Still enjoying our annual shutdown, but figured I'd check in and share a little about the past few days since I have gone quiet. 🤫
We hit up Reno! Just two hours away, it's a perfect spot for shopping, cocktails and quality time with my sweetheart! ❤️🍹 We even got to see the new sign being erected on the Atlantis as we looked on in awe at the massive crane, the only people in the indoor pool, laughing and swimming like dolphins. Had amazing croissants at Perenn Bakery and of course all you can eat sushi!
It felt good to get back to Downieville. There's such a comforting feeling leaving the city to drive into the woods, knowing you're heading home to your loving and welcoming community.
One favorite about life in Downieville is we occasionally get snow, but are just a 20-minute drive from the snow park at Yuba Pass. It's convenient not to be buried in snow all winter (I may be a little scarred from growing up in Colorado) but close to a stunning snow park! Perfect for cross country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, snowballs - being surrounded in a winter wonderland of fun!
Before Reno, we had a full house of visitors at Riverside and @carriagehouseinnca including our own assistant manager, Lydia and her friends.
We also had a guest who'd had her rental house wrecked by her former tenants so couldn't return to it. Sometimes people are not very kind to one another, but it's good to know we can be a tranquil space to feel safe and recover. Speaking of that, we have a guest coming in a few weeks who has recently lost her husband. Again, to be that special place where people go to heal, to reconnect with each other and with nature - it's just the best feeling to help people in that way.
Coming back to our little village after being in the hustle of the city, I am feeling a huge sense of calm. Of course not 10 minutes after returning, we hit up the St Charles Place, and wow did I feel like Norm in Cheers! It was like we'd been gone for weeks, not days. Everyone came by to see how our trip went. It's really special the way the community here treats each other.

January 19th, 2023: Just when I thought it couldn't get any more picture perfect! Woke up to a fresh dusting of snow and sunshine all around us! There's something special about a leisurely morning walking the dogs around town. I love capturing glamor shots of the buildings with their little snow hats on!
It was fun seeing folks shoveling the walk, and local chef John Perez getting ready to make magic at Two Rivers Cafe for his Thursday night specials.
Then took another stroll on the North Yuba Trail with my bestie at lunch. Met up with an old friend to strategize about the upcoming busy season ahead. It's crazy to think that just 6 months from now will be hosting a town full of people for Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival, 4th of July, the 25th annual Downieville Classic Mountain Bike Race and Festival the Downieville Mountain Brewfest , oh and bringing together the Downieville Gold Rush Days, and more! Not to mention several weddings! 2023 will be a big year!
I had lots of office time today, but made an effort to get as much Vitamin D as possible. It was just such a beautiful day I felt like a little kid who wanted to be outside.
As the evening rolled in, the town came alive with Downievillians out to grab dinner and socialize. We enjoyed a delicious meal at @boomtownorbust
along with Thursday night trivia. Then a second dinner (yep, good food shows up around here and you just go for it) was John's fine cooking at Two Rivers Cafe.
The night ended with a few rounds of ping pong ball at St Charles Place and we were home snuggling by 8pm. It was an awesome day in Downieville!

January 18th, 2023: Sunshine beaming over the mountains this morning with a beautiful display of clouds! What a stark contrast from this evening, snow coming down in flurries as the shops in Downieville shut off lights and head home before the storm gets too bad.
The dogs played like crazy running along the bank of the rivers. It was our assistant manager's day off, and I had office work to do most of the day but managed to get a few walks in with who I sometimes call the two headed monster (Sprocket and Torvi).
Torvi patiently waited most of the day looking out the window at the blue and teal water ripping by.
I finally had a chance to put the remaining Christmas decorations away. But I still couldn't bring myself to take down the billowing paper snowflakes that Lydia made.
It was also excellent to speak with Josh at ICMJ's Prospecting and Mining Journal and hear about the progress we're making on the Downieville Gold Rush Days. Stay tuned for dates and details! This is going to be good!
I squeezed in a manicure and pedicure with Kathy at Downieville Day Spa which was such a relaxing way to end a long day. And, the first pedicure I've had since I broke my ankle. Felt amazing. Kathy does have openings for Valentine's Day Weekend and we still have rooms open folks, so just a hint in case your special someone needs a break! ❤️
We ended the day with a veggie burger and pizza from Two Rivers Cafe. Excited for the snow coming and images will follow!!

January 17th, 2023: Yay! The sun came out today and lit up the snow-kissed peaks all around the little village of Downieville, CA! This is mountain living at its finest.
This morning I almost ran (funny because I currently have a broken ankle) out the door with my camera to catch the light just how it was after I looked out the window. The sun may have been out, but yikes 😬 it was cold. Our steps at @carriagehouseinnca were glossy with ice. I managed to slow down before I broke my other ankle. 😂
Walking like penguins, we visited Michelle
@coldrushdvl Cafe for a delicious oat milk latte. The town is so empty that Michelle, Torvi, and I played outside on the ice in the middle of the highway and not a car rolled by. I think they have the road closed, down the hill at the Marysville turn off. Guests staying at the hotels in town have been stopped at the road closure sign, but then show their reservations, and are let through to come up to Downieville.
After breakfast we went to work on our Valentine's Day weekend packages. Lydia and I had a blast putting a video together for social media (please check it out on our page and let us know what you think!) and then she hand cut some adorable paper hearts which we placed throughout the Inn and Riverside Mountain Lodge . We also found a fun way to repurpose the beautiful Christmas wreaths made by local artisan Sica by adding glitter hearts on them. And voila! Now we have Valentine's Day wreaths! Not sure why I never thought of that before...
I'm also not sure why I still love all the Valentine's Day stuff, but I'm guessing it comes from all the love shown to me by my very first Valentine, my mom and it reminds me of her. 🥹❤️
Speaking of love, Mike and I have been enjoying the local St Charles Place for pool and a few drinks a few times a week, and I'm looking forward to spending some time there this evening to connect with him and our dear community.
But first, we are about to enjoy some delicious veggie spring rolls from @sabrinas_at_the_forks (Sabrina's At The Forks) made by the amazing @autumns_butter_me_up_bakery 😋

Such a beautiful snowy day along the Downie and Yuba!
January 15, 2023 - Enjoying the snow blanketing all around us, strategizing with the one I love by the fire at Riverside Mountain Lodge lobby. It's exciting to be back into the innkeeper role. We loved greeting the folks who have come to stay at the lodge during this last round of winter weather.
We started the day visiting Robert at Cold Rush and chores around the Lodge and at Carriage House Inn getting ready for our next big event, Valentine's Day weekend and the weekend after. We had several guests checking out today, just in time as the snow is really starting to stick.
One couple who checked out this morning told us they were married here several years ago. They love to visit every year, and stay in their favorite room, but only in the winter. They sit fireside, watch the world turning white, and listen to the river rushing by. It's a reminder for us just how special this place is for our guests to return to. We are honored to be stewards of this magical place.
Torvi - the Lodge Dog, is loving this snow! She's our new (ish) pup, a 1.5 year old bernadoodle, so I think it's in her blood to love cold weather. She'd stay outside all night if we let her. Sprocket, the Inn Dog for Carriage House Inn, is an 11 year old standard poodle, and not so happy about the wet stuff coming down. He'd prefer to curl up, wait it out, and get pets all day.
This afternoon we have our new friends who moved to town coming by for a glass of wine. Then later, dinner (Mike's amazing Swedish Meatballs) with our dear friends who had to come to town so they didn't get snowed-in up the mountain, at their house past Empire Ranch.
We're gearing up for a seasonal shut-down and vacation, coming for just a few weeks in February. Stay tuned for more updates from innkeeper life in Downieville!

What a great weekend it was here in Downieville! Opening season for fishing, karaoke at St Charles Place, and all the businesses are bustling with locals and visitor alike. Everyone is a friend here in Downieville!
Fishing season opening day is a week from tomorrow! Are you ready to dust off your rod and reel and hit the currents here in Downieville? Miles our manager cannot wait to fish the North Yuba tributaries for the wild gems.
For those new to fishing this river and tributaries: There is a 5 fish limit on the North Yuba and many folks are successful at the confluence in Downieville by simply fishing with salmon eggs. The average fish size is 10 inches, but don't let that get you down! This river has several sections where it is stocked, but no stocking is done above Ladies Canyon.
The North Yuba is home to a "trophy" stretch which is located from Ladies Canyon to Sierra City. This section has a 2 trout limit and it must be over 10 inches to be kept. You will find beautiful wild fish that fight like they are larger than they really are.
Did you know that the North Yuba is open to fishing year round? In the off season, barbless artificial lures only are allowed and of course- catch and release.
We cannot wait to see rods on the river and wish everyone the best of luck this season!

The Riverside Mountain Lodge has this wonderful, riverside patio that creates the perfect mood for winding down or even waking up. Yoga, reading, or even a quiet dinner. The sun hits just right, the BBQ is ready to be ignited, and everyone is charmed by the river! We have hammocks and lawn chairs, as well as an outdoor shower in our garden for the days the adventure gets a little dirty!
